 Upcoming Events

Attention all SE-ARS and Vaseyi Members:
Mark your calendars for Sunday, November 2nd, at 2 PM at Bullington.
We will be entertained and educated by Will Ferrell.  His topic will be "My North Carolina Garden".
Here's how Will describes his garden:
  • "I designed my garden to shine September-October and March-June.  My design emphasis started with harmonious                combining of azaleas and rhodies on a primarily pink, purple, lavender, white, and clear yellow palette, with sections of true red or bluish red with white and clear yellow.  But it has evolved towards camellias and towards foliage combinations, indeed a foliage emphasis."
We look forward to seeing you all on November 2nd.

Our annual Potluck Picnic Meeting will be generously hosted by Hazel and Byron Richards at their beautiful home and garden at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 16.     We hope you will join us to enjoy delicious food and spend a pleasant afternoon conversing with fellow plant lovers. The picnic will be followed by our annual plant auction.
Please bring some picnic food to share. Try to think of a dish that is easy for you to prepare and will be part of a tasty meal. You might want to bring a great salad, an appetizing main dish, a heaIthful and delicious veggie dish, or a wonderful dessert. If you remember, bring a chair for the picnic and the plant auction, along with your checkbook to acquire plants for your garden.  Beverages and tableware will be provided.
**Look over your garden collection and find some plants to contribute to the auction.  If you are into rooting cuttings, bring some of those.  It’s a great chance to get something new and wonderful.
Judy and Chuck Van Rens

Our next meeting is set. It will be a Zoom only meeting on Sunday June 11th at 2:00 pm.  Joe Klimavicz has graciously agreed to give us a presentation on his breeding program. Joe has been breeding Azaleas since the late 80s. If you want to do a little homework, you can check out some of his creations on the Legacy project page on the Azalea website. Legacy Project Overview - Azalea Society of America
I am looking forward to it. I will send the Zoom invite out later this month. Be on the lookout for it.
Best Regards
Aaron

The main entrance to the South Carolina Botanical garden is located off Perimeter Road between Highway 76 and Perimeter Rd. The picture of Ray and Aaron shows the healthy azalea selection from the Beasleys that some members have requested and will pick up Sunday 10/24/21 from 2:00-4:00pm at the BRCC greenhouse.  Though not a formal meeting, this is an open air event  and would be a delightful time to get together and say hello and see the greenhouse which we supported with our donation last year.
If you didn't request some of these, there may be plants available after the distribution.

Take Exit 40 (Airport Rd) off I-26.  Head on NC 280 to Brevard.  After you pass Brevard College, turn LEFT on E. French Broad St.  When it dead-ends, take a left onto Park Rd. (ignore the 'road closed' barrier and drive through anyhow).  Then take an IMMEDIATE RIGHT on Elks Club Road (rock house on corner).  Drive past building on left to back of parking lot.  Mossery is located in the pine grove.    Note: If you use GPS, it will lead you into the road construction area from the Chestnut Road/Neely Road direction (which is blocked) and will create confusion.        Submitted by Annie Martin

                                          Joint Meeting with SE-ARS

SPEAKER:  BETTY MONTGOMERY
AND: PLANT AUCTION
BETTY MONTGOMERY is a local celebrity and author and member of Vaseyi/ASA and SE-ARS.  Betty writes the monthly garden article in the Hendersonville Times News.  She has two spectacular, artistic gardens.  One in South Carolina and one in North Carolina.  She recently published a book called "A Four Season Southern Garden" and will give us a presentation based on her book.  Following is the book description:   In A Four-Season Southern Garden, Betty Montgomery shares her gardening experience from forty years of love and labor in both of her zone 7 gardens in the Carolinas.   A hands-on Master Gardener who derives great satisfaction from nurturing plants, bushes, and trees, Betty gives the reader tips and information on the most successful methods she has found for creating healthy and colorful gardens. Betty joined forces with photographer Dick Carr to put the lovely images of plants on the printed page.   Dick has been behind the lens of a camera for much of his life, capturing the beauty of nature as it miraculously unfolds.   Betty and Dick have chosen some of the plants that flourish in the zone 7 climate, focusing on the ones that Betty knows and grows.   With Betty s extensive knowledge of plants and Dick s keen eye for photography, the two have created a charming book that will take you on a pleasurable journey through A Four-Season Southern Garden.

PLANT AUCTION:Please bring any nice plants you are willing to donate to the auction.  This will be like a plant exchange with a Live Auction.  DOLEY BELL has volunteered to run the auction.

This meeting on September 27 at 2 PM at St. John’s In the Wilderness in Flat Rock is a combined meeting with the Vaseyi chapter of the Azalea Society.   A lively auction for plants contributed by our joint membership following Betty’s talk is a great way to add highly desired plants to our gardens.
